Abstract

One of the few studies regarding professors in academia was of Dorfman's (2000) exploration on the personal, professional, and institutional factors behind the decision of older professors to keep working in the universities-a work which she revisited and updated ten years later (Dorfman,2009). Another study, conducted by Toker (2012), found that compared to other academicians, professors scored the highest in life satisfaction. Taking up further from these prior publications, this study investigates the factors that influence the over 70-year-old Indonesian professors'life satisfaction in the context of higher education in Indonesia. The combination of surveys, semi-structured interviews, and observations were utilized towards five participants of 3 females and 2 males. All of whom were older professors aged 74 to 81 and were still working post-"retirement"at several research universities in Indonesia. The results showed that for several aspects (defined below), the professors were satisfied with their life. They were also able to deal with past events, enjoy their present activities (balancing work and hobbies), and have realistic expectations of the future. In addition, some common traits were also found among the professors: acceptance of life, positive thoughts and attitudes, responsibility in their academic commitments (teaching and supervising students, and researching) and reasonable goals. On the other hand, different sexes and the academic background of hard or social sciences did not significantly influence their life satisfaction. This study pilots an investigation on the life satisfaction of staffs in higher education which is often not the focus of scientific research.
