Abstract

Acceleration program is accelerated learning process in special classes. Junior high school student who attend acceleration program may have difficulties to get adjusted with the academic load. Students need to get adjusted with the environment in order to deal with emotional stress. This research is aimed at describing the junior high school students’ self adjustment in dealing with academic, social, and emotional pressure which they feel during attending the acceleration program. The quantitative research data collection was obtained from 78 acceleration junior high school students participants using questionnaire based on self-adjustment theory by Haber and Runyon. The qualitative data was obtained by in depth-interview on 4 students who have highest score on the questionnaire fulfilled the 5 characteristics of healthy adjustment. Those who have lowest score, fulfilled only one characteristic healthy adjustment: the positive self-image.
