Abstract
Backpacks are the most widely used type of bag from various circles, from children to adults, because their use is the most comfortable. When used, the backpack is supported on two shoulders, so that the load supported by the body is not too heavy, in contrast to a shoulder bag. However, backpacks can cause spinal abnormalities and low back pain. This study focuses on knowing the relationship between heavy backpacks and low back pain in Tarumanagara University Medical Faculty students batch 2018. This study used a crosssectional design. 179 data were successfully collected through filling out questionnaires with research subjects from the students. 82.6% people with a bag >5 kg (n = 128) complained of low back pain. This finding is in contrast to respondents in other bag categories and bag loads <5 kg, only 42.3% (n = 33) and 16.7% (n = 4) who have complaints of low back pain, respectively. The relationship between the type and weight of the bag with the incidence of low back pain had a statistically significant relationship (p < 0.05). Relative Risk (RR) incidence of low back pain in respondents with backpacks is 2.32, which means that backpacks increase the incidence of low back pain by 2.32 times greater than other bags.
