Abstract
Chinatown (Kawasan Pecinan) is a traditional quarter where Chinese ethnicpeople working and dwelling. Pancoran-Glodok is the oldest and biggest Chinesequarter located nearby the old city Batavia. In the beginning, before the Dutch built Batavia (now Jakarta) in 1619, Chinese people had lived in the east estuary of Ciliwung River, not far from the port. Then they were expelled when the Dutch built a warehouse there. After the Chinese genocide by VOC in 1740, Chinese people were localized in Pancoran-Glodok area near Stadhuis (now known as Museum of Fatahillah) in order to monitor easier. Since the moment, this area grows as business district and the biggest Chinese ethnic settlement in Jakarta.This study focuses on the history of Chinese quarter in Pancoran-Glodok as apart of urban kampongs in Jakarta. It will trace the history and its influence in the context of urban architecture. The objective of this study is to describe the history of Chinese quarter at Pancoran-Glodok, analyze the character changes of the area through the city growth and development. This study use field survey, interview and literature study as the data collection.Research investigation and analysis shows that there are a number of changes of Chinese quartier since it was situated near Sunda Kalapa harbour until now located at Pancoran-Glodok area. This area has been experiencing a number of changes due to the dynamics of politic, economic and social culture of the city. Through the analysis of 3 elements (kampong, street and market), this area remains as a history witness of Chinese ethnic civilization through its architecture, tradition and culture.
