Abstract
"This research tries to answer the problem : How is the influence of single mother parenting towards the mental health of adolescents in a divorced family? The theories used are the single mother parenting in a divorced family theory and the mental health theory from Frank]. In general, the single mother parenting theory states that a single parenting mother frequently experiences lack and deficiency in parenting authority. The absence of a father causes the single mother to frequently be inconsistent in upholding her discipline. The loss of the family's source of income compels a single parenting mother to work. The twofold capacity she has to accomplish is not befitting compared to her time, condition nor abilities. Without being realized, all these factors cause a lack in the parenting process, and finally influences the mental health of a child. This research, using a depth interview method and observation as an additional technique took time for 2 weeks, from February 10 until February 24, 1999. Respondents in this research were two adolescent brothers and two adolescent sisters in order to observe the connection between the perception the elders and the youngers had toward the parenting of their single mother. The research shows that single parenting in a divorced family influences the mental health of the mother's adolescent. The lack of warmth and care that a single parenting mother causes the adolescent to not have a sense of security within themselves. The busy and tight schedule of a working mother causes the adolescent to not have a mother that is available for conversing and discussing. According to the mental health theory from Frank!, a child is frequently fearful in facing the future, hopeless and has a suicidal behavior. In facing their lives, adolescents feel that they do not have the freedom to make important decisions and other obstacles such as negative viewpoint from the society in relation to the divorced of their parents. Still respondents expect to have better life in the future. All wish to strive and create a happy family in the future in order not to repeat their parents' mistakes. Finally, it is advised to the single parenting mother to be able to spare time for her children in her busy work, for children need love and care from parents no matter what. Adolescents are given encouragement so that they are brave enough to face threats and not being desperate in facing life. To the spiritual and educational institution, it is advised to also care and support the children coming from an incomplete family. For further research, it is advised to do research towards respondents parented by single fathers and other researches denoting psychological problems experienced by a single father or mother from a divorced family. "
