Abstract
Adolescence encounter dramatic changes, not only physically and cognitively but also socially. The changes commonly happened in the age of 15 — 19, when they were still in senior high school. Social interaction at school is a kind of interpersonal process, which happens among senior high school students through a serial of verbal and non-verbal actions. When interacting with people around their age, adolescence often makes social judgment on someone. This became a reflector to them in judging themselves. Self-esteem is an evaluation of self. The subjects of this research are 240 senior high school students. Eighty students were from SMU Tarakanita 2, a heterorganic school. Eighty students were from SMU Tarakanital, where all the students are women. Eighty students were from SMU Colose Canisius, where all the students are men. This research used questioners and SPSS for Windows release 7.5 software to analyze the data. Hypothesis testing was done using Pearson Product Moment correlation. The result shown that there is a positive correlation between social interaction at school and students' self esteem. It also supported Harter theory (Dacey & Maureen, 1997), which said that encouragement and acknowledgment from classmates and schoolmates became one of the most important factor in adolescence's self esteem development. Through this research, the author suggested that parents should be more selective in determining school for their adolescence children because social interaction at school is connected with adolescence's self esteem. Also, adolescences should pay more attention to social contacts and communications among them as it has a link with the development of self-esteem.
