Abstract

Term of sentence causes stress to female inmates at a correctional institute. Stress factors may accelerate and cause negative symptoms influencing the cognition, emotion, behavior, and physical complaints of the inmates. The duration of the terms of sentence influences the process of adaptation for the inmates, including the environment and the stress condition they experience, and the inmates must integrate with the stress condition during the incarceration at the correctional institute. The purpose of this research is to emphasize any differences of stress for female inmates during the first month until the third month and the fourth month until the sixth month of incarceration at the Correctional Institute for Women (Lembaga Pemasyarakatan Wanita) class II A in Tangerang. Data was collected based on 55 female inmates (period of incarceration 1 to 6 months) by using questionnaires and measured by the "Two - Independent Samples Test" and SPSS program version 12.0 for Windows. The result U(54) = 374,500, p > .05, indicates that there is no significant difference of stress during the first month until the third month and the fourth month until the sixth month (the first six month) of incarceration for female inmates at the Correctional Institute for Women class IIA in Tangerang.
