Abstract

Construction industry is a fast growing industry in Indonesia.It has certain business characteristic however.It also contains quite big business risk consequences if not well managed. Therefore business management in construction industry is an important factor to be considered if the goal is project success. Either poor management of a project is project leader responsibility with different styles of leadership. The study aims to analyze qualitatively leadership styles of the successful contractor’s leader in the construction project. The study conducted to identify types of leadership styles applied by successful contractor’s leader and identifies factors that influence leadership styles practice of successful contractor’s leaders. Deep interview were conducted with two contractor’s leaders who hold very good reputation in project development in Indonesia and considered to represent the successful contractor’s leaders in Indonesia. Psychological questions also asked in determining their leadership styles. The result leadership styles of the two contractor’s leaders according to Kurt Lewin (1939) theory are predominant and combination of participative or democratic and delegation or free reign styles types.
